Workshop questions and overview

4/23/2024

Use this space to provide an overview of how you are reading your own work and what you want your other readers to know about where your final project is at.

Please post your response to these questions no later than Friday. Relatedly, make sure you've gotten your draft to your readers by that date as well.

1.  What are you trying to prove in your paper--what is your argument and how are you proving it?
2. What do you feel is working well in your paper and why?
3. What are you less confident about in your paper and why? What feedback can we give you that will help you to approach a final revision?
4. Are there things that you know you want or have to do in this draft but are not done yet that you think we should know about as we read?

Your answers to these questions will guide the workshop. So try to be as thoughtful and as complete as you can be.

AND ONE FINAL NOTE: Make sure you get your draft to your readers no later than Friday so that folks have time. Please know that your draft doesn't have to be totally finished, that's what that last question allows for. The more complete it is, the better the feedback you'll get, but don't let not being totally done prevent you from getting your draft to your colleagues.

A refresher: here are the reading groups for next week's class.

ON THE NIGHT OF OUR WORKSHOP:
We will be meeting in person, so, if possible, you can bring a hard copy of the paper and the comments to give to the writer. You can choose to do this electronically, but make sure you are able to talk about the feedback you have for them.

Final papers are due to me no later than 6:00 on 6 May 2024.

1. I am trying to argue that synthesis, while a complex topic for students, is an important skill for them to acquire in high school. I am using a proposed unit plan to map out how I can best teach this skill to high school students.

2. I am feeling confident in the actual unit timeline and the materials I am collecting/making. I have a bit of practice with unit development, so this part of the project is something I feel confident in.

3. I am less confident in the rationale/overview part of the project. This part involves the explanation of the unit, its goals, and why it is important. Blending research with this kind of argument is something I have not had much practice with this kind of writing, so I would like some feedback on how successful the overview is in getting the argument across. I might also like some help in making sure that the description of my unit is clear enough for readers to understand the order of assignments.

4. The unit overview is not finished yet, and is missing parts like a fuller rationale of the goals for the unit, and a complete overview of the unit (i jump around when I write, so almost everything isn't "finished")

1. I am writing this paper because I want to emphasize the importance of narrative writing. I also wanted to try to create a unit that I've done that typically is reading-heavy, and try to add more writing into it. I am pulling from Inoue, Kittle, Gallagher, Elbow, and Villanueva to emphasize not just narrative writing, but voice and personal identity as significant in writing.
2. I think that my idea is interesting. I think narrative writing is used often, but often just thrown into units haphazardly. I think that I propose a design for this unit that will allow for ideas to be connected to readings, and push students to think harder about how they write and why it matters.
3. I am less confident about writing this style of paper. I have never written this style and am unsure how to integrate research into this paper seamlessly. I think that some of my quotes work well, but I am unsure how much will be too much. I would love feedback on different ways to integrate research into my paragraphs.
4. I need to finish my sections on the final narrative and writing assignments throughout. I honestly started writing and then began second guessing if my formatting makes sense. I'd love for my readers to let me know if my outline for the paper makes sense, or if I should make adjustments.

1. I am organizing a new course sequence in this paper and how I believe its important at the school I work at. I am still working on which readings I'm using to support my paper.

2. I think I have a strong argument to why a research writing class is important at the school I work at. For example, our district's students fall partially below meeting requirements for English MCAS and our school does not follow a strict writing curriculum for what language is taught to each grade level. I touch on this in more depth in my paper.

3. I am less confident in how to format this paper. I start it as a narrative utilizing 1st person, and then get into the course sequence. I would appreciate feedback on formatting, and areas I can strengthen my argument. However, it is only a few pages as of now, so I am unfinished in several spots.

4. I am repeating myself a little to what I said for #3, but I leave comments in the margins of spots in my paper I plan on revising. I am very early in this draft and plan on adding more today and tomorrow to have a bit more for Tuesday's last class.
