week four: what do we ask our teachers?

6/14/2021

USE THIS SPACE to propose one possible question for our guest teachers during week five. There will no doubt be some redundancy. And I have a few questions I like to always ask, but in order to get to a final and reasonable list of questions for our visiting teachers we have to start somewhere.

Certainly, think about questions you've had about the profession, things you've wondered about. Also, think about some of the things we've been reading and talking about in terms of classroom practice. Consider formulating questions around those issues as well. Also, consider the posts of your other colleagues. If one of you asks a good question, perhaps try to come up with a different question rather than just repeating what you read and "pinned" (see below in How to Respond) as a good question already.

WHAT TO POST: Propose one or two questions for our teachers and offer a brief explanation of why you want to ask this question.

HOW TO RESPOND: Indicate with any kind of reply--even just "yes, this one" to Indicate that you think one or more of the questions your colleagues posted would be a good one to ask. This will pin this question for use with our teachers.

1. How has COVID directly impacted your teaching career? What are the struggles? What are some helpful tips to aspiring new teachers?
2. Will COVID be a thing of the past or will we see the lasting effects of it in the classroom?
3. What is some basic advice for a first year high school teacher? Anything you wish anyone told you?
4. Lastly, what is some advice for student teaching? Any tips or tricks to make it through?

I think question 3 is great to ask! I would add some specifics too, maybe adding what would be effective for first year teachers to succeed in reading and writing aside from in general too!

1. What would you say to new ELA teachers in terms of setting up a successful year/unit plan with many different standards but also supporting students at the same time? Unit plans and standards are very stressful when approaching a full subject!
2. What have been your challenges and possible solutions to engaging and fostering a love of reading and writing in your students?
3. What are your suggestions or advice for how to incorporate Learning for Justice Standards in with ELA MA state standards?

How much do you need to know about your students in order to be most helpful to them?

How do you help a student who is not as motivated to do well as other students?

How do you support students who struggle academically?

I would like to hear more on question 3 regarding how to support struggling students that is best for the individual in an appropriate way.

1.) How do you effectively acknowledge student success in the classroom?
2.) Do you think students are now overly reliant on technology/online classes because of the pandemic/ how do you see the transition back to in person classes going?
3.) How do you deal with self doubt as a teacher, especially if you feel that students aren't motivated? What do you do to inspire students' learning?
4.) How do you create a positive/engaging classroom environment while still maintaining organization?

I think these questions are useful to ask, especially going into student teaching hopefully in the next year.

I struggle with number four. I would love to know how to maintain organization. Especially throughout an entire days worth of classes.

The questions I want to ask have already been posted, so I’ll spend more time reflecting on why I want to ask them.
1. Are there any specific ways in which you seek diverse and differentiated texts?
One of my major focuses when writing lesson plans is trying to compile a varied text set that’s rich in differentiated texts. However, sometimes I struggle or feel like I hit a wall trying to search for these texts. Are there certain resources that can help point educators in the direction for selecting the right texts to connect to their lesson and meet their students' needs?
2. How do you motivate the students that seem disengaged? How do you react to this situation?
A lot of time and consideration goes into planning an engaging lesson; Measures are taken to specifically select interesting texts and provide actively engaging lessons. So, I can imagine being discouraged after finding students disengaged or missing the mark. I would want to know how a teacher responds to this in-the-moment and then, how they might consider trying to re-engage the student.
3. What are some ways you initiate relationships with your students and their families?
I’m definitely overwhelmed with the idea of having so many students, but am still committed to creating individual relationships with all of my students, including active relationships with their families. I think including parents in their student’s educational experience is important for their success. I would like to explore ways in which teachers can accessibly develop these relationships, having so many students.

1. What is your advice on how keep your students engaged? Especially in an online setting.

2. What is the most fulfilling aspect of educating? What made you want to become an educator?

3. How do you manage your school work when you are away from school?

4. How should one approach student teaching?
