PERMANENT Q&A Discussion Board

2/9/2021

USE THIS SPACE TO POST QUESTIONS OR CONCERNS.  I forgot to post this very discussion board in time for folks to post questions about the syllabus as part of the syllabus check in assignment. I will move any questions that got posted elsewhere to this space, along with answers.

Further, this is a permanent Q&A discussion board. So if you have a question about class, please feel free to post here. I check the discussion board during office hours, which I have everyday except Monday. I will answer any questions I can here.

Of course, if you have a concern that is of a personal nature, feel free to email me directly or come to an open student office hour. However, it's true that a lot of times students have the same question. I will admit to you that I get annoyed at having to answer that same question 25 times. So please use this discussion board for questions that are of a general class nature--if you have that question other people have it too.

I was just wondering when/ where the Google Doc with the feedback A/U's on the reading journals would be posted/where? Thank you!

Unless you hear from me, via email, you should assume you have an "A". If you've posted something that is not an "A" I will reach out to you specifically. It is on you to keep track of how many "As" and "Us" you accumulate. I only record either an A or a U. There will be times in the semester where everyone gets a freebie "A", like last week's post. And I will include that in my count. So, at midterm and at the end of the semester, I will tally up your As. If you have enough for a B, you'll get a B. If you have enough for an A, you'll get an A

Okay great thank you!

You had mentioned in the class policies that if you receive enough A's, then the U's don't matter. Is there a specific number of A's that you need to get in order for this to happen? (Ex: you need at least 8 A's for the U's to be irrelevant) Thank you!

Yes. That is covered in the assignment page for reading journals.

Hello!
I know it basically says this in the syllabus, but whenever we post a reading journal, we have to respond to a peer with a 100 words every time? I was just a little confused about this because for example, the last reading journal (the one about grammar) we were told to respond to a peer anyways, so would we need to respond to another addition person? I did anyways, but I just wanted to check.

Also, when will you normally post the discussion boards? For example, the one for tomorrows class on the first three chapters in our book.

I'm sorry for the delay in getting the discussion board for tomorrow's class up sooner. I'll try to remember to get the discussion board up immediately after class.

As you say, this is covered in the syllabus. But the last discussion board built in that you were responding to someone's post. So you are covered.

I know that, especially at the start of the semester, folks ask a lot of questions out of fear for their grade. What I ask of you is that you begin to trust that I will do everything in my power to support you earning a strong grade. And if a mistake is made on my end, it will never hurt you.

Is it okay to email a discussion post if we're having trouble finding the "submit" button? I had trouble finding it earlier this week, although I see it here now.

Thanks! (Syllabus Check-In post)

Yes you can email it and I can post it. I think I've said this a number of times both in class and in emails. 1) one thing you can do is to use your arrow keys to go all the way to the right and all the way down. You won't see the submit button, but if you hit enter, it often works. 2) I've got an email in to weekly to help solve the problem.

Do we have to post a reply to someone on the "Lives on the Boundary" Chapters 1-3 discussion board, or are we all set since we discussed it in class?

I answer this above, but, yes, you are covered since the way the prompt was set up you were writing in response to someone else.

Also, because I've gotten this question a number of times and I know folks worry about things like this, I added some language to the assignment to indicate that if a response is required of you, I will tell you that in the prompt. Sometimes the response will not be required. Sometimes, as it was this last time, it will be built in to the response. But, from here on out, I will indicate if you have to respond and how.

Regarding the book club, which you'll probably talk more about it in the upcoming weeks, when we are providing feedback to the ENGL 101E students' reading journal, will you want everyone in the group to provide a piece of feedback to one reading journal (collectively) or will each one of us be given a reading journal to work on?

I have updated the assignment. Because I am not teaching first year students this semester, this won't be a component of the assignment.

Regarding the "passes" for assignments is there anything we absolutely cannot use them on?

The only thing you CAN use them on is the Reading Journals.
