12 January 2022
Hello to you all--
I'm writing to let you know two pieces of information. First, check your email--I emailed at both a BSU email and the email on the class roster. I've sent everyone a document that outlines what material I've gotten from you and what I haven't. I've also indicated what each need to do next in order to secure a passing grade for this course.
Secondly, complete information for what you need to do to complete your research project for this class is now available on our class website. You can find it as the last link in the drop down menu for our class or by clicking on this link.
Grades are due on 21 January 2022. You have until noon to get me your final research report. Please note that I want to meet with each of you to review your draft prior to that deadline. You will need to email me to set up a half hour conference some time between Monday and Wednesday of next week. You are required to have a draft for that meeting.
I am not asking students to participate in any more discussion boards since so few of you have participated in any meaningful way prior to this. And I am not asking you to complete interviews for this research project nor am I asking you to create a powerpoint presentation version. In other words, I've greatly reduced what I'm asking you to do for this course in an effort to encourage you to do your best work in this last week.
Good luck to you and (hope to) talk to you soon.

27 DECEMBER 2021
Hello Everyone--
This is the Class Update for the week of 28 December 2022.
Housekeeping
After one full week of class, I have not yet heard from two students. If your intention is to stay in the class, please contact me. Additionally, please send me your introduction to the class 250 words and a picture to post on our class website.
This next part goes for all students: as it is the holiday season, I know that folks might not be able or interested in getting work done on time. If folks who have not posted to our class discussion board complete missing work by 3 January 2021, I will consider everything to be back on track.
Last Week’s Work
While everyone who posted to the first Discussion Board prompt did a solid job of summarizing what was said in the articles, the way most students wrote the summary made it difficult to tell that they were reporting on the research of someone else. Everyone’s entry read as if they were just telling us something they knew and not telling me about an article that they read.
When we write about research, it is important to distinguish between what is your thinking about a subject, your argument, and the arguments of others.
But folks figured out pretty quickly how to do this in the second discussion board post of the week. You all used the list of verbs in your posts, and that made it impossible not to refer back to the authors of each piece. Some nice work here by Jialu, George, and Ruoqi.
This Week’s Work
This week we start your research projects in earnest. You will complete the first part of the draft this week by positioning yourself as a researcher and formulating a question. You will start the Locating and Evaluating Sources Part I project this week and finish it for next week. Information is available on all of this on our class website and/or by clicking on the blue links in this update.
This might be a good week to meet with me to talk about your project. And good luck with this week’s writing exercise. Look for other updates as needed and, most of all, Happy New Year, may 2022 finally bring us out of the challenges of the past two years.

22 DECEMBER 2021
Hello Everyone--
I hope everyone has had a chance to check out our class website at www.leetorda.com. As I said in my last update to you, we will not be using blackboard any longer and are now using this website and only this website.
USE THE SYLLABUS ON MY TEACHING WEBSITE
The syllabus you should follow for this class is located on that website. There is not much difference between the syllabus you were emailed and/or saw in blackboard, but that isn't the point. From this point on, only the syllabus on my teaching website is accurate.
A DRAFT OF OUR CLASS PROFILE PAGE IS READY TO VIEW
As you will see, I only have three complete introductions (picture and text) and one half complete (just the text) up on the website. If you have not yet sent me either or both, please do so as soon as possible.
PLEASE POST TO THE CLASS DISCUSSION BOARD BY MONDAY
Students have all asked me about late work. I do not appreciate late work because it makes my own job harder, but I understand that it is the holiday season. As long as you can post to the two discussion boards available on our class website by this coming Monday, I'm fine with that.
Next week, we will begin the research project in earnest. A new schedule for meetings will go up on Sunday evening for you to meet one-on-one with me. Remember, you only have to meet with me twice, but are welcome to meet more often. In the meantime, if you celebrate Christmas, I wish you a very merry one. And whether you do or not, I wish you health and happiness this holiday season.
Talk to you next week,

Hello to you All--

You can access that website by clicking on this link or by cutting and pasting www.leetorda.com into your browser. If you are accessing this website from China, you will need to use a VPN.

If you look on the syllabus for our class, you will see that there are a few tasks I'm asking you to complete:
- There is a new video explaining how to use the teaching website (shorter than the last one--and I'm much happier in it).
- I'm asking you to write a 250 word introduction of yourself and for your to email it to me with a picture of yourself (I've received two so far)
- And to email me back with confirmation that you've read the syllabus and the policies for the course.
