My name is Billy Burns and I am a 2nd semester freshman. I am an education major from Scituate Massachusetts. I have wanted to be a special education teacher since my junior year. Being a teacher, you are able to give back directly to the community, and that is what has attracted me to this profession. I am the oldest in my family and have had to take care of my brother and sister and ultimately fill in the gaps that my mother couldn’t. This school also was a no brainer for me, as it is one of the best education schools around. I have had countless teachers telling me to go  to Bridgewater as it is a very valuable education at a good price, and it's a nurturing environment with professors that actually do want you to succeed. I transferred from another school, and there was very little to no help for the students, and the professors viewed it as their work versus their job. In my 1st semester of this class I was able to get better at reading and writing, and ultimately refine and polish a few skills that I hadn’t worked on too much since my junior year. I hope this semester I can expand upon these skills, and ultimately be able to have them help me teach in the future. Any career will need writing and comprehension skills, but specifically teaching will need these skills the most.

My name is Sophie Campagna, and I am a psychology major. I never really know what to say in introductions, especially in person (I am awkward with people I don’t know). I guess I can start off by saying that this is my second time starting as a freshman at Bridgewater State University because I ended up taking a gap year because online classes just aren’t for me. I have always been anxious, and the anxiety of not having a set schedule of going to a certain class every day really stressed me out, especially with my asynchronous classes. I come from a huge Italian family, so I am very close to them, especially my older brother. I have two pets both named after foods (that’s just a fun fact I love to tell about myself), my cat’s name is Brownie, and my dog’s name is Olive. I actually had to beg my dad for about ten years to get a dog, and during the summer before my senior year (of course, when I’m planning on going to college when I graduate) my dad finally caved and said we could get a dog. I am always trying to see the bright side of things, especially now, in the circumstances of Covid, and everyone being very stressed about everything. I try my best to be kind to everyone no matter what, and when people show that same kindness back, it makes me feel as though the world cannot be as bad as people might think it is.

Hello, I'm Lee Torda. I am celebrating my 21st year teaching first year students at BSU. And even though the past few years of teaching online have been tough, I'm very grateful for all of my years in the classroom. In addition to teaching, I help to coordinate first year writing. My two proudest career moments are designing and implementing the supported section of ENGL 101 and for helping to launch our  Undergraduate Research program. Both of these programs have gone on to win national awards, but most gratifying to me is knowing and staying in touch with the many students who have benefited from these programs.  I recently moved from Jamaica Plain to New Bedford, and I'm still getting used to the move. But I love being only a mile from the ocean, and I walk or run the Cove Walk up to Fort Tabor as often as I can. I live in a big old house with my husband and three very old, hard-off-hearing, senile cats. They are happiest when I'm sitting in a chair, with a blanket, and reading. Which is funny, because that's when I'm happiest too.
