Friday's Class (10 April 2019): Finishing your Annotated Biblioraphy.

5/7/2019

Finish your annotated bibliographies (they are due on Monday). Post to our class blog the answer to the following two questions (200-300 words):
  1. What have you learned about your topic having done your research that you didn’t know before?
  2. How has it changed your thesis? As you answer this question, please re-write your thesis the way it will probably appear in your paper.

Using the BSU Maxwell Library Database, you a responsible for locating five sources that will help you write your Big Idea Essay. Three of those sources need to be documented using the annotated bibliography worksheets that I passed out in class on Monday (John has extras for those of you who weren’t there).

YOUR ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHIES ARE DUE IN CLASS ON MONDAY, NO EXCEPTIONS. Please note the following parameters when searching for good sources:
  • You may use Wikipedia or an online encyclopedia as a source to help orient you to your topic, but you cannot count it as one of your five sources and it can not be one of your annotated bibliography entries.
  • You may use one website on your topic for general information purposes, and you can include it as one of your five sources in your bibliography, but it can not be one of your annotated bibliography entries.
  • You can use popular newspapers and magazines that you locate through a database and access online for one of your five sources. These sources should be what you use to complete your three annotated bibliography entries.
  • You have all of Friday’s class to work on this part of the project. You will have no other time in class to locate and annotate your sources. I expect you to be able to come to class Monday with your annotated bibliography complete and printed out ready to be used in class.

What I’ve learned about my topic is that mentoring is a really helpful event for young people. There are even a current national priority and policy interest in the area of mentoring. I learn that kids that have a mentor will be more successful and I learned that in a five-year study sponsored by Big Brothers and Big Sisters in Canada found that children with mentors were more confident and had fewer behavioral problems. Girls in the study were four times less likely to become bullies than those without a mentor and boys were two times less likely. In general, young people showed an increased in their abilities to succeed in school and they felt less anxiety related to peer pressure. Also, mentoring relationships with youth are complex. The kids grow with their mentors and they’ll have a really close relationship.

My thesis changed a lot. At first, I was going to talk about how some mentors just give orders and don’t connect with the kids. Then I was going to talk about how some mentoring program need to have a better way to hire mentors and that they need to hire mentors that love their job and care about the kids. And now my thesis is: How mentoring programs and mentors benefit and affect young people.

I really appreciate how you write about how your thesis has changed. I want to suggest that a stronger thesis would be this part of what you write here: mentoring relationships with youth are complex.

This is because I don't think anyone would argue that mentoring young people is a good thing. But it's also not an easy thing. So writing about what is complex about excellent mentorship would make for a stronger paper. You would of course include information about how mentoring is good for young people and talk about what good mentoring looks like, but you'd also talk about what is hard about it and what mentors and mentees have to do to have a good mentoring relationship. Does that make sense.

I have learned that undocumented immigrants are all over the United states, for the same reason, which is to be happy and have a good life that they have always hoped for. People that are undocumented have the goal when they move to the United States, and it has been going on for a very long time and people don’t understand how much of a struggle it is. When in school, students that are undocumented have to wonder what they are going to do with their life, with college getting closer, undocumented immigrants want to make their future the best that they can but unfortunately they can’t get financial aid because they haven’t filed their taxes, but they still want to have a good life, because after all, the united states is a country of opportunities.
“Why undocumented students should have student green card” I changed my thesis because students that come from a different country should have at least someone to depend on, so that they could have a social security number so that they can at least apply to scholarships, because being undocumented, won’t be easy go get a job to even pay for your college tuition, and when applying to college, the student will only get scholarship from private colleges, which won’t be even half of the college tuition. And on top of already being undocumented, do we really want to have uneducated, jobless, homeless, ignorant people in the United States? That is just going to look bad in the United states

So this is an interesting and specific idea: students who have come to this country, I"m assuming, with their parents, who are undocumented, should be given a "student green card" in order to participate in public education in the US. I can see that as arguable and provable at the same time.

To start off I would like to tell you my topic which is Animals. I wasn't aware that when animals are taking from the wild into the zoo the employees took them at a very young age. Taking a cub allows the employees to teach these animal how they want them to be trained and in some extent they force them to love a certain lifestyle. I also didn't know that the zoo keepers combine different breeds of animals together. That was outrageous to me because behind closed doors these animals are considered to be caged animals, even though they put on such a great show. These animals sometimes are stripped away from there family with no type of control over their own lives. It's so sad to acknowledge that animals can't have a say so to what they want to do because they have to bow down to there zoo keepers. These articles changed my thesis in a way that I actually assumed now that taking a wild animal out of their natural habitat can initially affect them mentally and socially.
