For the first official discussion board post, I am asking you to write a 250 word summary of our first reading,  “Why Go to College?” US News & World Reports June 17, 2019 By Emma Kerr. For your convenience, I am re-posting the link to the article that appears on the syllabus for our class here:
https://www.usnews.com/education/best-colleges/paying-for-college/articles/2019-06-17/is-college-worth-the-cost.

Before you post,
you might want to watch the video about summarizing that is also available on the syllabus and, again, reposted here for your convenience:
how_to_do_a_good_discussion_board_post.pptx
File Size: 212 kb
File Type: pptx
Download File

In your 250 words, you want to make sure you:
1. Include details from the entire article, not just the beginning and end.
2. Make an effort to identify the main point--the thesis, the main argument of the essay--or, in other words, what you think the writer wants you to know from reading the article.
3. If there are parts of the article that confuse you, you can write about that.
4. Keep your post to 250 words. Anyone can summarize anything if you can use as many words as you want.

TO POST:
Click on the "comment" button in the top right. Fill out the few pieces of info the form asks for, cut and paste your 250 words into the dialogue box.
**You don't need to respond to your colleagues for this post.
***I will serve as the "respondent" for this post.

For most students, college is worth it, but there are many alternatives. University tuition is very expensive. Many families cannot pay for many children's tuition at the same time, but many people still choose to go to university because they can get better jobs. In fact, this is correct, because the job opportunities and salaries for a high school degree are far less than those of a bachelor degree. But more than 70% of people mentioned that this also depends on the quality of the university. Students must choose a good university to acquire knowledge and the ability to make money at the same time. This is an area that high school students will not involve at all.
Many students choose student loans to make them more profitable. In fact, they need to repay a lot more than they think, and they have many alternatives to choose from. First, students can choose to take some general education courses at a community college first and transfer credits to a four-year university. They can also provide vocational training and short-term certificates. Second, people can also choose a start-up company like Make School in San Francisco to learn skills-based applied computer science courses and spend two years of bachelor's degree to earn an annual salary of $60,000 or more.
But it all depends on personal choice. Before choosing a four-year university, we need to weigh not only the starting salary or median salary after graduation, but also the personal benefits, experience and opportunities that the university can provide, such as criticality. Thinking, social circle, etc.

There are many reasons for people to take 4 years of college. Making a better income is one of the important ones. According to research by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Attending college costs on average about $26,000 for undergraduates at a four-year institution, based on National Center for Education Statistics data for 2015-2016. It is about 100000 dollars for a four year degree and also the student has to value the opportunity cost while they are in college and not able to take a full time job. People who graduate from a college degree make about 30000 dollars more compared to those who only earn a high school diploma on average. It is worth it financially to go to a four year college since you could have a brighter future. However, it also depends on the college. According to research, for the bottom 25% college graduates are less than the median of the annual wages that a high school diploma person. In this case, it is not worth it to go to college in a financial sense.
Going to college or not is not only about financially. Students also thinking about the general education and ideas they get at college is also important.
Going to college may not be a good choice for everyone. Everyone get their own situation and people should weigh themselves and see what is the best fit for them. Earning a bachelor degree doesn’t mean you are good for the rest of your life and only get a high school diploma doesn't mean the end of everything. People have to work hard lifelong for their career but according to research, going to college seems have a better chance to make good money.

For American students, going to college has many benefits. First of all, because going to college can help students improve their abilities, including the ability to make money, professional skills, independent thinking, and so on. Because the general education courses and professional courses that students can learn during the university can help them achieve these goals. In particular, some high-end and high-paying industries must be supported by professional knowledge learned in universities, such as aerospace, medicine, pharmacy, and law. The second advantage is that people with college diplomas generally earn higher wages than workers with only high school diplomas. Research by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York shows that the gap can reach more than $30,000. Many companies and employers prefer to recruit students with a four-year bachelor's degree because they are more diverse and more competitive than candidates who only study in a single specific field. Moreover, the economic benefits of going to university are greater than the investment in education. Although the cost of going to college has become higher now, in most cases, its return is still considerable. US News pointed out that the return on college investment in career is 14% (Emma, 2019). The third advantage is that the experience of going to college is a precious asset in life. Because in university, students can learn how to study, learn to think critically, learn to take social responsibility, etc., which will benefit people for life. In general, for American students, going to college is a good choice.

Revised edition:

The essay mainly talks about why go to the college, in other words, it answered the question that is college worth the cost. For about 85% of the students, attending into the college is important. The reasons are comprehensive. According to the UCLAs' National Norms Fall 2017 survey, about 72% college students mentioned the ability to make more money and about 76% of freshmen want to gain a general education and appreciation of ideas. These are parts of the reasons of going to a 4-year college.
However, the cost of attending college is higher than student’s or families expect. They may spend more than 20 years to pay for the loan for college. But the salary after graduation would compensate for the cost from college. Research by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York shows that the gap can reach more than $30,000. However, the research also shows that a quarter of students who graduated from college would have less money compared with who graduated from high school. US News pointed out that the return on college investment in career is 14%. In long term, college would be better.
There are some alternative ways instead of getting into the college. The community college would help the high school graduates to earn cheap credit and get certification, like in area of nursing, medical assistance, and cosmetology. This could help the student and family to get less cost on education. Also, institutions like Make school would help students to reduce the fees for college, and at the same time getting a higher or equal pay after receiving the lessons compared to college students.

This article mainly talks about why American students should go to college, and whether it is worth it. Because American university tuition fees are very expensive, many families cannot afford the tuition fees of their children and worry about whether this expenditure is necessary. But most people still choose to go to college because they will find better jobs. But this is correct, because college degrees will have more job opportunities, and the salary will be much higher than those with high school degrees. The article also said that compared with people who only got a high school diploma, college graduates earn an average of $30,000 more, so to a certain extent it is worth it because there will be more opportunities. But more than 70% of people mentioned that this also depends on the quality of the university. Students must choose a good university to get more professional knowledge and better educational resources. However, the cost of going to university is high. It may take them more than 20 years to repay the loan, but the salary after graduation can cover the university tuition. US News pointed out that the return on investment from colleges to careers is 14%, so in the long run, going to college is a better choice.

In the article, the author raised the question of whether it’s worth for students to go to a four-year college. Different scholars and experts hold different views about the question. The cross-nation survey in the US has shown that most students benefit and earn more money after college education. However, the data also suggests that 25% of students receive similar salary with the workers who have high school diploma.

Some economics have argued that the economic benefits of college education for these 25% students are relatively small. There are better alternatives for this group of students. Other educator claims that what students major in have a big influence on their average wages after college. Majors like pharmacy and computer engineering generally lead to higher wages. In addition, students often spend more years for paying off their loans than they previously expected.

Given this situation, some educators propose alternative ways for students. They can attend community college, which provides vocational training and short-term certificates. Community college therefore acts as a great transition for students to acquire skills related to their expected jobs. The proposal could successfully overcome students’ financial issue and provide the essential skills for specific jobs at the same time. Similar academic programs are also set up for students to learn skills in specific fields.

In contrast, many scholars refute the idea by reminding that student can learn to be a critical thinker and a good, engaged member of society through a four-year college education. A rising junior at Arkansas State University conclude that all the challenges and potential costs of attending colleges are listed. However, it’s still individual’s personal choice for attending college. Just remember the values for college education when you made the decision.

High tuition fees often deter many students who want to go to college. Many may have to take out huge loans to go to school. However, good jobs and salaries depend more on working ability than educational level. But learning about higher education and the professional world is still a very important experience in life. On the whole, however, college is worth it. The combination of specific education and general education is far more important than general education. Therefore, it is very important to choose what major to study. Salaries vary widely from major to major. If you're saddled with years of crippling student debt, you need to choose a higher-paying major. Of course, going to college is not the only way. People have found alternatives to going to college. We can choose to transfer to an institutional university at a lower cost. Or through the examination of professional qualifications to prove their knowledge. However, there are many experiences in college that cannot be replaced. The wonderful college life, the social relationship between people, the trivial time of learning and entertainment. These lives and memories cannot be replaced. Therefore, choosing to go to college is not just about choosing a diploma, but a different life experience and future lifestyle. Of course, everyone has their own choice. Your life doesn't have to be less exciting just because you don't have college.
