Use this space to post your "in-class" writing"

Having watched and responded to the TED Talk in the first post of today's asynchronous/online class, I'm asking you to respond to what it says a little more personally.

In about 300 words, respond to the following question: What are your "multipotentialite" super powers? What are you prepared to do about them?

We tend to think that if you can't get make a direct link from a college degree to a profession (like doctor, teacher, cop, etc), that somehow a major or any experience really is sort of a waste. This TED talk suggests that's short-sighted. So, as you answer the above question, you might think about what your major is and if that is the major you want it to be. You might think about what you are good at that isn't school related and how those skills might be put to use during your college career--and beyond? What are you passionate about and how can that passion be a part of your education and future career?

Again, this only needs to be about 300 words, HOWEVER: In addition to your initial post, please read and respond to what your colleagues have to say. Respond to as many people as you want, but you must respond to at least two people by connecting to them in some way: a superpower you see you both having/a superpower they wrote about that reminds you of something you are good at/a superpower someone wrote about that you wish you had and why/how you think this person's superpower could help them (maybe in ways the writer doesn't seem to realize). Responses need only be about 100 words--unless you have a lot to say to your colleagues.

In Class Writing

I always knew I wanted to be working with kids birth- k ever since I was 8 years old. I struggled as a kid and no one took my problems seriously. So I wanted to change that. I want to be a guide for kids that need help. I want to listen to them and let them know what their saying is serious and I want to help them grow. I am good at babysitting because I pay attention to the babies and I don’t lose focus. I can focus on stuff for a long period of time and that is one skill that helps me with babysitting. This helps because if you have more than one baby you need to be really focused because they pick up everything and try to eat it. Anything can happen in a couple of seconds. I am passionate about my major and I have stuck with my major for a very long time. Even before I went to college I knew I wanted to do Early Childhood Education Birth-k. I am good at helping people and listening to their problems and giving them advice. I am good at recognizing adult situations and realizing if someone needs help. I am good at reacting when someone is in danger and I try to help them as fast as I can. I don’t even need to think before helping them. I have always wanted to do my major ever since I was young and Bridgewater is a great place to get educated for my major. I also like to write papers and write essays. I babysit a lot and that encourages me to keep going with my major. My family is very important to me and they inspire me to do what I want to major in everyday.

You definitely are meant to be a teacher. I like that the reason you're driven for this is based on personal experience and the changes you want to make someday. I can relate to you personally because I am going to school for the same thing and for similar reasons. I want to help kids that struggle. Teaching will definitely be something you're good at.

I like your stance of where you are coming from with helping the younger children. Me wanting to be a pediatric neurosurgeon, I feel as if we should start helping from the early life stages of life.

Based on your experience I think that working with kids will be great for you. I think it is super important to be able to help and understand children at such an early age. I admire your passion for wanting to help others!

My multipotentialite superpowers include working with others, children and adults, helping and guiding and being a leader. I’m going to keep my career options open after I get my diploma and not be opposed to working multiple jobs and reaching my full potential. I really enjoyed watching this Ted Talk because the speaker, Emilie Wapnick, brought up new ideas that I hadn't thought about and brought me to the understanding that a lot more people feel the same way I do. Growing up, it feels like the people around you all have a plan. Seeing others extremely passionate and driven about a specific goal always made me insecure about not having that. Since I can remember, my answer to the “what do you want to be when you grow up” question has always been a teacher. I never felt like I was really good at anything or excited about any specific careers but I did know I enjoyed helping people, leadership and interacting with children. I've done babysitting my whole life and always taken care of my two younger siblings. Junior year when I became a teacher's assistant in a special education classroom, I enjoyed that experience and was able to decide on a major in that field. It became routine to answer the question that I wanted to be a teacher and that's what I plan on going to school for, that I hadn't thought about anything else or how much I even wanted it anymore. I got a job as a cashier at Lexus of Northborough my senior year and started questioning everything. Surprisingly, I enjoyed working in an office. I got many compliments on my work performance, professionalism and organization skills. I liked being good at something new. I had become accustomed to deciding on a career I thought was the only realistic thing I could do, and not seen my potential at possibly many other things.Wapnick stated “It's the idea of destiny, or the one true calling, the idea that we each have one great thing we are meant to do during our time on this Earth..” I thought I was only supposed to do this one thing and shut down the idea of many other interests.

I can relate to Abby's superpowers because we have similar interests. We both have a passion for wanting to help kids when we are older. We want to be there for them and that's why we choose our major. I can relate to Abby and her interests. We always wanted to work with kids in a school setting or be some type of guidance since we were young. We both want to do something to assist kids and help them grow. We have a lot of superpowers in common and both want to help kids in the future. We both want to help people when we are older.

I honestly can relate with you. Growing up til this day I have strong leadership qualities that put me into positions that called me to do great things. I also enjoy helping children. Down in Texas where I'm from I part take in many volunteering jobs that connect me with the youth of my community.

I agree with your statement about feeling insecure because I have not always been driven to one specific goal. I also think that it's important that you plan on keeping your options open after graduation. Though it seems like you have a good idea of what you want to do, you never know what other jobs could come your way that you could be really good at and find interesting.

My Multipotentialite superpowers would be being indefatigable, having a patient and understanding mind, and my respect for anything and everyone. Growing up I have always had the push to take part in helping and seeing the younger generation under me on different levels. Most adults feel as if being a younger individual we don’t go through any hardships or mental frustrations. I really want to acknowledge how the speaker pushed on nothing is wrong with you when you want more than one thing done, but due to society they will make it seem wrong. society gives people a view and pressures us to go with it. I also support how Emma talks about the self sabotage that a person can do to ones self. It greatly lives within me but that indefatigable spirit keeps me going, putting up a secret barrier from the doubt. The doubt in which is present from a negative isolated environment. As a college student that is something that is seen greatly amongst us and me personally it’s something that I’m working on deleting permanently from my life and would also love to do the same for children younger than me. I would also like to reaffirm that the question of “what do you want to be when you grow up'' does symbolize limitation. I say this because when asked that question you stand there and think long, and yet most people sometimes just say what first comes to mind, without actually going over their answer. Given that, respecting what people really feel or think should give you the pure stance of who they really are or what they want to become.I want to become a pediatric neurosurgeon one day to deepen a discovery of what children go through on a level this world is blinded to.

I agree to Grace we both want to help and guide the younger generation. I like how she has patients because with my experience their are some kids that need someone who is very patient and understanding. I agree that the environment we live in can effect children especially if it is negative and bad. It is good to help the younger generation especially with the covid pandemic the kids will need all the help they can get.

I agree with many of these points. There is a lot of pressure on the younger generation that not all of the older generations understand and it can be difficult sometimes. That is why I think it is great that you understand this and want to help younger children if they are struggling. It is very important to make sure they know they don't need to focus on one thing in life and can expand their knowledge on topics they are interested in.

I agree with Lily and Graces viewpoints. The world isn't easy to navigate, especially with all the different challenges we as a society have been facing. I feel like the older generations doesn't know how to respect and validate our struggles and mental hardships. They did not have to go through certain things when they were younger as we do now. Patience is something the whole word needs to have. We need to all focus on helping each other a little more.

Why Some Of Us Don’t Have One True Calling

A question was asked at the begging of this Ted Talk, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” When asked this as a kid I would always say that I wanted to be a teacher. As I got older I realized that I definitely have no interest in becoming a teacher. Throughout high school, it was really hard for me to find something that I was so devoted to that I would want to spend the rest of my life doing it. I always felt as if you could only choose one job, rather than multiple. Some of my multipotentialite superpowers would include having the ability to work well with others and being able to work off of their ideas as well as my own, and having strong patience. I went into college as a psych major. I always found psychology super interesting and did very well in the psych classes I took in high school. After my first semester, I realized psych just wasn’t for me. I didn’t find my classes much of a challenge, and honestly had really no idea what I actually wanted to do once I got my degree. Starting my second semester I am now majoring in communications with public relations. So far I am really happy with my switch, and It’s resulted in me actually enjoying school a lot more than I was in the fall. I think that this major ties in with my multipotentialite superpowers a lot more than psych did. I want to one day work in PR and advertising, and I believe that my ability to work well with others and their ideas, as well as having good patience, will take me a long way with my career.

I always felt the same way in the sense that I needed to pick one career and stick with it. However, I learned that is not the case. I found it interesting that you wanted to be a teacher when you were younger, then found an interest in psych, later learning that you didn't want to major in psych. This just shows how needing to know what you want to do at a young age is not true. It is also great that you know your multipotentialite superpowers and how they can help you in your career and life. I think they are great superpowers to have!

I can relate to thinking you know what you want to be and then changing that idea completely. For a while I thought I wanted to be a teacher too, a math teacher. Then I realized that I kind of hate math. So, I decided to become a psychology major instead, and so far I'm happy with that switch. I think it's really good that you're happy with your major switch now. It's nice knowing what you like to do.

As a child, I wanted to be doctor but as time went on, I had no interest of being a doctor because I thought it was going to be a boring profession and was a lot of work to do. I never switched my major of political science because I know I want to become a lawyer, so getting my P.S degree would just be right for me.

I have always been passionate about art and sports. These were two of the biggest things I focused on during my childhood, all the way through high school. For a while during high school, I was determined I was going to go to college to study architecture because I loved designing houses and other buildings. Halfway through senior year though, I decided I wanted to study business instead. I get bored very easily and tend to focus on something for a little bit then switch to a different interest. I would definitely consider myself a “multipotentialite”. It wasn’t until the end of my senior year that I realized I didn’t need to know exactly what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. I had time to think about it and discover other passions, especially during college when I had more opportunities to try new things.

My decision to major in business also came from the idea that I could do a lot with a business degree. When I was interested in architecture, I felt my career options were more limited and my school options. I would have never applied to Bridgewater if I hadn’t changed my major. This was good for me because I still don’t know what I want to do. I figured, if I was still interested in art and sports, I could incorporate those passions into my career, whether it is designing logos for sports teams or designing a sports complex (which is actually something I have thought about doing). There are endless options for everyone, you just need to find what you are passionate about and incorporate it into your life.

I think it's really cool that you're thinking of different ways to incorporate art and sports into your major. Hopefully as you get more into the groove of college you can find fun classes to sign up for that can have something to do with the things you're passionate about. Also, if you think about changing your major, that's totally okay too. You don't have to know what you want to do right at this very moment. My mom always jokes and says that she still doesn't know what she wants to be when she grows up. I think it's really awesome that you have multiple passions and want to work those into your career.

I'm going to be honest, I'm not really sure what my multipotentialite super power would be. As a kid when asked what I wanted to be when I grew up I always said a vet because I wanted to work with animals. As I got older I realized that I probably shouldn't do that because then I would have to see animals hurt. Now I'm a psychology major, which could be seen as a big difference. For a few years now I realized that I want to be an adjustment counselor because I realized that I want to help people. An adjustment counselor is basically like a school therapist, and I really want to be able to help kids through their problems. I always want to be empathetic towards people because I never know what another person is going through, and I think being an adjustment counselor would be a great option for me. I worked with kids throughout all of high school, and I realized that being able to help them through their emotional problems is what I want to do with my life. I realized that the age group (4th-6th) wasn’t for me, but I would love to work with high school students to be a support system in their lives. When I was in high school I didn't really like my counselors because I just didn’t feel like I bonded with them, and it didn’t feel like they cared about me. I want high school students to have someone in the school that they feel like they can trust with their problems and have somewhat of a connection with. It sucks when you’re in school and feel like you have no one to talk to.

Sophia, I totally agree with you. I really don't think I have a multipotentialite super-power because, truth be told, I'm not really great at anything. I'm a normal person trying to get with life's issues and just working with stuff I've got in my life.

Sophie and I share similar interests. We both love helping kids/people in general. Emotionally connecting to a person is a great superpower, most people lack the ability to emphasize with others. I think your superpower will definitely help you the most in your degree. You never know who needs a person to rely on and working in a school setting will give you that satisfaction of impacting someones life in a positive way.

If I’m going to be completely honest, I don’t really think I have a multipotentialite superpower because I’m not really special and I’m not a person who does special things in my life. My profession in the future is going to be a lawyer and I’m my major in college is political science. I really don’t think it’s anything special because my profession and my major are both common day jobs and a common day major. How can I sit here and say that my job is more special than either a teacher or a doctor or any common job nowadays? I’m not really good at anything because I do normal things that anyone does in life, like clean the house, wash the dishes, take a nap, go to school, wash my car, walk the dog, feed the dogs, etc. Why I think I’m not special or have a multipotentialite superpower is because I feel that life is just normal for me and that I don’t have time to do anything outside of what I’m using doing with my life. To me, life is just boring, and I feel that being boring is really going to be my life. But, on the other hand, I’ve traveled to different places, like Virginia, Tennessee, New York, Italy, and quite soon, South Korea. But if you count that, I think traveling would count for my “multipotentialite superpower”. But, in reality, I’m just a normal man, going to school, doing my chores, and living my life the way I want to live it because I feel like if I did more things in my life, then life would really be confusing and I wouldn’t have enough time to do all the things I really want to do with my life before I do die.

Helping everyone around me has always made a significant impact on my life. As I grew up, I took care of other people with out looking for anything in return. I worked in a daycare with children that were a part of the foster care system and the Department of Children and Families. I took care of my relative with cancer, and I spent time with my brother, who has autism. Everyone has a different career path, but my interests have always involved making a positive impact in others' lives. So I would say a superpower of mine would be caring and taking care of others. My degree is in Psychology, and I am planning on getting my masters in Social Work. I plan to use my degree to help children in adverse situations. I would say another superpower would be that I’m adaptive to new challenges. I like taking problems head on and dealing with them right away. The ted talk had spoken about being inventive and ideal synthesis. I have always loved cats. I believe in the near future I will incorporate my love for them and my passion for helping people, maybe opening up a room for children with rough backgrounds that need the comfort of a kitten to play and hold. It isn’t a normal job society would expect but it is something to create and be open about. I think it is great to explore your capabilities, college is for finding who you are and accepting life as a whole. Finding a passion can be difficult but theres endless opportunities to explore. A person’s career options doesnt just have to end at one major or one interest. Life isnt always a straight path and anyone should be open to new experiences. We all have many interests and it does good to explore them during your college years.

I was introduced to the subject of psychology in my senior year of high school and ever since then, I have taken an interest in the subject. So much so that I decided to pursue it more here at BSU as a psychology major. However, there are some times where I would sit by myself and reflect if I can really see myself doing something with psychology as a career. And sometimes those thoughts really lead me to thinking “Do I want to do this?” My parents tell me all the time that I need to know right now what I want to do with myself and that puts a lot of pressure on me since I’m not even sure myself, but I can’t tell them that. On the other hand, art for me has always been a part of my life. I used to love to draw in my free time, and my mother always kind of pushed me to pursue a career much like hers as a web designer. But I personally did not want to mix my hobbies with work since it will no longer become something I enjoy doing in my free time. It would just turn my passions into business. Somewhere down the line I would like to come up with a career that can utilize my strengths in creativity as well as staying within the field of psychology. And as a result of this I think my strongest multipotentialite power would be individuality. Although this is not much of a super power I think it’s detrimental to know what you want for yourself without the influence of others, regardless of their position in your life.

Like Emily, I have always had a lot of interests. I’ve always had many passions, like the performance arts, community service, nature and the outdoors, writing and reading, and making people laugh, just to name a few. I was able to do many activities and explore some of many passions in high school. I took several classes in Education and Theatre and I joined clubs and got jobs that gave me the opportunity to work with children. I also was able to explore journalism, doing interviews and taking pictures for school events. When it came time to choose a college major, I was lost. I loved my education classes; I learned a lot about working with children and they really helped illuminate the profession for me and helped me realize I did not want to enter that field. My experience with journalism, doing interviews and knowing how to find answers helps me solve problems and communicate more effectively as a stage manager in the theatre. A lot of my interests have given me a lot of experience in communication with other people, which is why I chose Communication as my major. I know I am not going to end up at the job I think I want right now for the rest of my career. Communication is a broader field and is a good major for many careers I am interested in, like stage management or event planning. I also related to and saw myself in a lot of the communication majors I met while touring college campuses and deciding on a path for myself. I’ve only been here one semester and I am already in a very different place than I thought I would be. The idea of exploring my interests and expanding upon them to create a life I am happy with instead of getting trapped by choosing one is one I like a lot and hope to do.
