Online Book Club: Getting Up & Running
Follow these steps to set up your book club journal.

NOTE: I will talk you through this process in-class during the second week of classes. Consult the syllabus for exact days your group will be meeting (in our zoom classroom) to get this set up. If you miss the class meeting, you will need to complete this task on your own before the first book club meeting during the third week of class.
  1. Open the email I sent to your BSU email about book club. The subject line will read “Creating Your Book Club Reading Journal”. I will have marked it as “high importance,” which means that it will have a little red exclamation point connected to it.

  2. Click the link to the google doc included in the email. It should work for you just by clicking on it. If it doesn’t, cut and paste the URL into a new browser page.  This google.doc is set for anyone with the link to edit the document OR Click here to access the TEMPLATE for your Fall 2020 book club reading journal. At the top of the .doc, you should see the following:

My Book is:

My Facilitator’s Name is:
Instructions for posting to this google.doc/reading journal: Each week, your very great and thoughtful book club facilitator will post a prompt in the chat of your book club zoom meeting. Copy paste that prompt along with the date directly below these instructions each week. That means that your journal will be organized with the most recent date at the top of the document and later dates at the end of it.

  1. BEFORE YOU WRITE A SINGLE WORD OR DO ANYTHING ELSE: The document you are looking at is a TEMPLATE. Before you can start your journal, you need to go to the “file” tab (first option on the far left of the tool bar), click on “make a copy” from the drop down menu) and then RENAME your document with the following name: YOUR NAME.BOOK CLUB JOURNAL.TORDA 101E/144.

  2. So, my book club journal doc would be named TORDA.BOOK CLUB JOURNAL.TORDA101E/144.

  3. Once you’ve named your journal, click OK. This will automatically take you to your newly named and saved, very own Fall 2020 Book Club Reading Journal. Bask in your technological success.

  4. Click on the “share” icon in the far-right corner of your google.doc. That’s the blue button with the lock image on it. In the dialogue box that pops up, ignore the “share with people and groups box” and focus on the “get link” box below it. Click on the word “change.”

  5. Once you’ve clicked on the word “change” you will have the option to set who can view and edit your journal. Make sure you set it so that it says “anyone with the link” has access to your journal. AND THEN, click on the drop down menu to the right and make sure you set it so that anyone with the link can be an “editor” to the document. Once you’ve done that, click on “copy link” (on the right above where you just set your document to “editor). Then click “done”.

  6. Last step: Send me an email at ltorda@bridgw.edu.  Paste the link you just copied into that email and send it off. I’ll check to make sure you did all of this right. If you did, I’ll give you one free book club journal week that you can use at any point in the semester to get out of writing a journal. If you didn’t, I will be sure to tell you and, sorry, you miss out on the free journal week.

WHAT I WILL DO NEXT: After I’ve confirmed that you’ve set up your book club reading journal correctly, I will share the link with your book club facilitator. That means that both your facilitator and I will be able to read and respond to your journal. Once book club gets rolling, you’ll start to notice my comments in the margins. These comments are meant to help you to read better and to write better about what you are reading. Lots of comments aren’t a bad thing. In fact, they are a good thing. If I’m not commenting, that means I’m bored with what you had to say.

HOW DO BOOK CLUB JOURNALS FIGURE INTO MY GRADE FOR ENGL 144: For complete information on how I will evaluate you for book club, go back to the full explanation of the assignment on this website by clicking here. But, basically,
  • In order to earn and A for the 50% of ENGL 144 that book club counts for, you must complete 9 of the 10 weekly book club journals.
  • In order to earn a B for the 50% of ENGL 144 that book club counts for, you must complete 8 of the 10 weekly book club journals.
  • If you complete fewer than 8 of the book club journals, you won’t earn higher than a C for the 50% of ENGL 144 that book club counts for.
