your Life in Pics: Part I

Our next mini-assignment is to look at family photos. And the first step is to learn how to write about those images. Select one photo to write about here. But my suggestion would be to select up to five photos. For this project, I'm going to ask you to select and write about three, but it's good to have options. 

Learning how to describe what is happening in a photo is not actually as easy as it sounds. In class on Wednesday, I am going to ask you to partner up and for your partner to draw your photo from your description. But, of course, too long a description will bore people and be tedious. So you want to figure out how to both give enough description that someone can fully visualize the image/scene, but not so much that they lose interest. Further, you want to make sure you are describing the right things--the things that will most help a reader to understand what you most want them to know. 

In the mini-assignment, your job will be to communicate two things: 1) what do the images say about what you've inherited--what is your heritage--and 2) what do the images show about how things have stayed the same or changed?
You want to consider those two questions as you select your images and also as you describe them in writing.
