11 JULY 2016 WEEK ONE: SETTING UP THE SITUATION
M Introduction to the course. IN-CLASS: In class discussion of Book Club and Mentor Text Memoir. In class work on Mentor Text Memoir. Book Clubs meet briefly to pick books, do some first exercises, and to determine how many pages to have read for first book club. In-class work on Grammar Lust & Loathing (both).
W READ: Chapters 1-3 in Constance Weaver's To Enrich & Enhance Writing. DUE: Please locate one article that deals with education from the past year—it can be from any newspaper or magazine, popular or scholarly. Have it read and be ready to write about and discuss your article in class. IN-CLASS: We will work as a class on how to write your Reading Journal on the Constance Weaver reading. Continued work on Mentor Text Memoir.
18 JULY 2016 WEEK TWO: WHAT LITERATE PEOPLE DO
M READ: To page 132 in Lives on the Boundary, and handout “Why Johnny Can’t Write.” DUE: First Reading Journal. Draft of Mentor Text Memoir for Workshopping. Please bring TWO COPIES of your draft for use in class. IN-CLASS: First workshop. Discussion of sample evaluation letters and “Reading With Love.”

M READ: Handouts by Wolfgang Iser and Frank Smith. READ, also, agreed upon portion of your novel for book club. DUE: Reading Journal on the assigned reading for the day but NOT your book club novel. IN-CLASS: first real Book Club. Q &A about Book Club Presentations. Also in-class: Online Book Club explanation.

W READ: Handouts by Louise Rosenblatt & Paulo Freire. READ, also, the rest of your book club novel. DUE: Reading Journal on assigned reading for the day but NOT your book club novel. By the time class starts, have posted to the Online Book Club Discussion Board. IN-CLASS: Last Book Club. This is your time to get your short presentation ready on book club. You’ll have extended time in class to do so. In class discussion of Midterm Check-in. Please come to class having read the information available online on the portfolio link for our class.
1 AUGUST 2016 WEEK FOUR: RESEARCH IN THE FIELD
M DUE: In-class presentations of Book Club Group. You’ll have a bit of time to polish your book club presentation, but not a ton of time. Prepare accordingly. IN-CLASS:In-class discussion of Research In Teaching Diverse Populations assignment. Please read the assignment information available online before coming to class. Also in-class, research topic selections. Library Research Day. Either we will go to the library people or the library people will come to us. Time in class to find articles, work with your group.
W READ: Chapters 1,2, & 5 in Because Writing Matters. Parts 1, 2, and 6 of Write Beside Them . DUE: midterm check-in materials. Reading Journal on ALL of the reading assigned for today, ONE journal for all of the reading. In-class work on annotated bibliographies. Come to class having read and taken notes on at least one of your articles. IN-CLASS: Time to work with your group on your Research in Teaching Diverse Students Presentation. In-class workshop on annotated bibliographies. Also, In-class conversation about Assignment Design project. Please come to class having read the material available for that assignment on the class website. In-class discussion of Philosophy of Teaching and Final Portfolio. Please come to class having looked at the assignment materials available online on our class website.
NOTE: Today is the day the midterm portfolio is due and the last day you have in class to work on your research in diverse populations group presentation. Additionally, I have an obligation to attend the ATP symposium this afternoon where two of my students (actually, previous 301 students) are presenting their summer research that I mentored.
To that end, I will not be in class when you arrive. You will have roughly 2 and a half hours--from 1:30 to 4:00 to do two things: 1) write your portfolio cover letter (the prompt is available on the portfolios link on our class website) and 2) work with your group to determine the scope and outline of your presentation (see the assignment link for research in teaching diverse students on our class website).
I will be in class between 3:30 and 4:00 for questions from groups and individuals. From 4:00 until 5:15 we will discuss the reading for today and cover other things important to the last week of class. Additionally, I will bring the manilla envelopes.

8 AUGUST 2016 WEEK FIVE: TEACHING LITERACY
M READ: Part 4 of Write Beside Them, Part 3 in Because Writing Matters, & handout on language diversity (We Do Language), DUE: Reading Journal for ALL of the reading assigned for today, ONE journal for all of the reading. Research in Teaching Diverse Students presentations. You'll have a bit of time to prep prior to presentations, but not much. Plan appropriately. Have your annotations and your cover-letter/reflection ready to turn in to me. IN-CLASS: In-class workshop of assignment design. Bring any and all materials you have on your assignment. Consult the Common Core Standards in preparation.
W NOTE: RATHER THAN MEET IN OUR CLASSROOM, CLASS WILL BE HELD ONLINE. CLICK HERE TO ACCESS THE ONLINE SPACES WE WILL USE FOR CLASS. PLEASE MAKE NOTE OF THE TIME REQUIREMENTS FOR EACH ASSIGNMENT.
