The first collaborative writing assignment for the semester is a document designed to make people on our campus aware of a new minor opportunity out of the English Department: The Minor in Writing & Writing Studies. Prior to Fall 2014, students within the English major could elect to concentrate in Writing & Writing Studies, but students outside the major did not have as much choice. If students from outside the major elected to minor in English, they essentially majored in Literary Studies.

In short, your assignment is to produce a document that explains and promotes the new minor.  This is a first project where you can begin to put into play the skills and techniques we will read about and talk about in class. You should be thoughtful about things like audience, purpose, and the role of document design. As I read and evaluate this work, I will look to see how intelligently you’ve considered those three things and how they are present in the document you ultimately produce. Please check on the syllabus for dates for workshopping and for turning the document in to me (this piece will be turned in to me at the end of week three as part of your midterm check in portfolio).

To create a successful document, please consider the following:
  • Who are you writing to?
  • What kinds of information will they want to know?
  • How will you make that information meaningful to them?
  • Where will you make that information available to them (I could have just as easily asked how you would make that info available to them)?

In groups of three, you will be responsible for two documents:
  1. The actual promotional document for the New Minor in Writing & Writing Studies
  2.  A Reflection Letter, two-pages and double spaced, typed. In the letter, you need to write out your answers to the bulleted list of questions on this page (who, what, how, etc). Your answers should include a bit of reflection on why you made the decisions you made—given that you could have gone another way.

NOTE: Each group needs to produce only ONE promotional document, but each member of the group should write his or her own two-page reflection letter.

How I will evaluate this Assignment
The Writing Minor Campaign is worth 10% of your final grade in this class. In order to earn a "B" grade you must
  • participate thoughtfully as a member of your working group
  • produce a draft of your writing minor campaign document
  • participate in the workshop for the document
  • write a response letter to your workshop partner during the workshop
  • Read the letter you get from workshop and put in writing how you intend to incorporate that feedback into your revision
  • Include your reflection letter with the final product.
  • Turn in your revised, final document along with all of the drafts and worskhop materials.

In order to earn an "A" grade for the Writing Minor Campaign
You must do all of the required work to earn a "B" Grade and
  • Be an excellent and considerate member of your group
  • produce a document that reflects serious consideration of audience and purpose
  • produce a reflection letter that takes seriously the work of explaining why you made the choices you made, including how you incorporated revision suggestions from the workshop.

In order to earn a "C" grade for the Writing Minor Campaign
  • You must participate as a member of your group.
  • You must write a response letter to your workshop partner during the workshop
  • You must turn in your reflection letter with the final product
  • You must turn in a final product.

Failure to meet the requirements for a "C" paper means you fail the entire 10% of the Writing Minor Campaign grade.

**You will be required to revise your Writing Minor Campaign material for the midterm portfolio using feedback, even if you've earned an "A" grade. If you are not happy with your earned grade after mid-term, you are welcome to revise your Writing Minor materials until you have earned the grade you want.
