This is book club blog post is open to everyone, regardless of which book club you are in. As the title would indicate, I am interested in what you have to say about character. This is one kind of directed prompt you could give your students to get them writing and thinking about a text--as readers we often gravitate towards characters we like, but we often have the most to say about the characters we hate or are confused by or weirded out by. So that's a place to start.
1. Post about two flat palms worth of writing about the character or characters in your book that most confound you. Indicate, of course, why they confound you.
2. Read what other folks had to say about their characters and be inspired by it. Respond to one or more of your colleagues--either in sympathy or with a quick defense of a particular character. You should feel free to comment on characters NOT in the book you are reading if you feel inspired to do so. Ask questions of each other. Really flesh out each others' ideas about character in these two texts.
