Proposal

An introduction to the problem
Every week local students can go home and eat homemade meals. How about International students? At the beginning of the semester, they are curious about the new and fresh American food, but they will soon miss their home countries and want to eat their own food when the curiosity fades away. International students, especially Asian students, cannot get used to eating American food immediately. It is a torture for them to eat the same American food every day, without the opportunity to eat they are familiar with. What’s more, there is Homecoming Day every year and families of students will play around and bring them home. And on the weekend after Homecoming Day, there is no local students on campus and the dinning hall will open late in the evening. The International students cannot grab food and feel more homesick at that time. They may feel sad and distracted from daily study. Why don’t we set a special Family Day for International students?

The proposed solution
In order to build a “family” for some International students who miss home and miss the food in their own countries, I propose to hold a “Homecoming Event” for them. It will be held on the weekend after Homecoming Day in BSU. Every International student (There are around 80 International students in total) can sign up for this events. Every International students can make their own foods which are popular in their countries. Students signed up will be divided in to several groups depending on their nationalities. They will gather together in International Scholar and Student Service office where some simple cakes and fruits will be offered for breakfast. Their transportation and fees of ingredients will be provided. ISSS can borrow free vans to take students to supermarkets to purchase the ingredients they need and want after breakfast. Each group will get 100 dollars for ingredients for 7 dishes that will be served as lunch. They will then be sent back to their resident hall where shared kitchen and cooker can be used to make delicious native foods. At around 12pm, students will go the ISSS office where microwaves are offered to reheat the hot foods and they can share the dishes with each other to meet their appetite and alleviate their homesickness for a while. They can fell the warm from friends and staff from the ISSS to refresh themselves for the second half semester of study. The information will be sent by ISSS to make sure every students from other countries will have the equal opportunities to get involved in.

The anticipated benefits
This proposal will improve the life quality and provide a sense of belonging to International students. According to the statistics from the 2015 Campus Climate Survey, only thirty-six percent of the International students feel like they belong at BSU, which means most students are not satisfied about the environment of BSU and one of the problems is they cannot get used to the food. The International Homecoming Day will help to solve the problem. They can make their own food for free and enjoy the familiar flavor to alleviate the homesickness, which is also good for their health. In addition, they can share food with students who speak the same language and get care and love from them. The love from friends can be a substitution for the love from families. Also, it is an opportunity for them to exchange different cultures. They can pass on food culture of different countries. Furthermore, they can feel that BSU pays much attention to them and holds another Homecoming Day specifically for them. BSU tries its best to create a kind and comfortable environment to make them feel like they are at home. I believe if we succeed in holding this event, in the Campus Climate Survey for the International students for next year, the rate of students who felt the sense of belonging will be higher. If the café can grant this each year, the life quality and sense of belonging of the International students will be improved greatly over years.

Scholarship in support of the project
If you are the sponsor of the Homecoming Events for the International student, more and more International students will know the existence of the café and feel grateful to you. Your reputation among the International student will be good and you will be more respected among all the businesses in Bridgewater. In addition, it will be more easier for those International students to drink coffee and eat simple food in your café because they are familiar with you. You have already “enjoyed a growing reputation for quality coffee and food served in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere”. I believe the café will be another spot where International students can meet and chat with each other. The sponsoring will make the café more profitable and earn more revenue every year. Last b

Hi Jiayi,
I can see you worked hard on the proposal. First of all, I clearly understand your writing about the problem and the solution.Your proposed solution sounds good to me! However, I think it would be better if the event can last longer rather than a one-time thing. For instance, dividing into several groups and held the event as a monthly event. That way, maybe the title of the event should be different..such as "Homecoming China" or "Homecoming Korea". It is just a personal opinion!! I think your proposal is very feasible and ISSS is doing something similar to it now as well. Finally, it is obvious that international students would benefit from the event and I agree with your idea that the school would get benefit by having good evaluation in campus climate survey.

ENL 202 Grant Proposal
Problem- Bridgewater State University prides itself on being able to produce a healthy and accepting learning environment for our students. Along with providing the space for these environments to produce strong learning, they try to focus on how appealing the setting of these environments can be. I believe to achieve the goal of maximizing every student’s potential here, we must be able to provide them with the setting that allows them to learn and grow efficiently. One of our biggest struggles comes from some of our outdated buildings here on campus. Us students understand that some of the teaching structures here have struggled to keep up with the times of technology as we move through the decades. Often, schools with immense amounts of money from high tuition and dense population can rebuild and renovate any structure they believe could be problematic to the school’s overall teaching ability. Unfortunately, $1,000 will not put us in any position to reconstruct any building used here for learning.
Solution- To benefit the students and teachers alike we must turn to a more inexpensive route for solving this issue. Hunt Hall, located on School Street, seems to take notoriety because of its lack of an updated learning environment. The desks are uncomfortable, functioning air conditioning system is unavailable, and worst of all the structure itself is unattractive inside and out. Once again, replacing or renovating the structure is unrealistic to accomplish with the allotted money given by the grant. A fair solution given the size of the grant would be to replace some of the tools being used by the classroom. This leads me to believe that replacing some of the desks with a more comfortable set would benefit the student’s learning best. After doing some research I concluded that, with the use of $1,000, I could replace the setting of one classroom to have tables with more comfortable seating. This would allow the school to see the benefits of utilizing better tools in the classroom and what effects that may have on a student’s overall learning. By purchasing tables and seats separately, it will allow for a higher volume of both tools in the class. Another benefit is keeping each student close enough to their peers, so they may communicate ideas and work together efficiently.
Benefits- Having the ability to change a learning atmosphere in a way that inspires students to produce better work can greatly impact your school’s credibility. The goal of every school is to consistently improve their student’s work and hopefully make a statement with how well their student’s impact is on the real world. When incoming high school students come to the university in hopes of seeing an establishment that cares about their enrolled scholar’s setting thy feel more welcomed. Soon enough this new and improved look will reflect on how each person who has toured the school will regard the university. They will see the attention to detail on what needs to be reevaluated for the better. This will make for a better student application rate and even a rise in the productivity of currently enrolled students.

Hi Walid! Thanks for sharing your ideas! Your proposal is effective and easy to understand. The problem of your proposal is that some of our outdated buildings on campus restrict students' feeling of study and their potentials here. Our teaching structure should be updated in order to keep up with the times of technology as we move through the decades. In this way our university is able to establish better environment for students by providing them with the setting that allows them to learn and grow efficiently. Even though the allotted money given by grant is not enough for reconstructing any building here, your proposed solution is still working well! Replacing the setting of one classroom to have tables with more comfortable seating can benefit students a lot with more delighted learning experience during class time.

I totally agree with what you mentioned about allowing for a higher volume of both tools in the class by purchasing tables and chairs separately. I cannot realize this kind of benefit without your suggestion! Another benefit is keeping each student close enough to their peers, so they may communicate ideas and work together efficiently. And I think this scenario is literally suitable for tiny class like us! And as for schools, better learning atmosphere will build their reputation in an effective way, which will contribute to better student application rate and even a rise in the productivity of currently enrolled students. Exactly every student will like more comfortable learning environment which is based on great credibility of schools. In addition, improvement like utilizing new tools in classroom will show the care and concern that schools give to their students. In a word, your proposal is well-organized by listing the problem, the solution and anticipated benefits, especially your analysis of how to select a feasible way to solve the problem even with limited grant. Thank you!

Grant Draft

1. Introduction to the Problem
Commuters who park in the parking garage near Waygand must stand outside in the elements (wind, rain, cold) while waiting for the BSU busses which can sometimes take 10 to 15 minutes. This includes both students who attend classes and non-students who come to campus for special activities. The area where the bus stops to pick up is exceptionally windy due to building placement causing a wind tunnel which can have sustained winds as much as 13 mph. In addition, there are bus stop enclosures at every pick-up location all over campus except for this lot.

2. Proposed Solution
Install a prefab 10’ x 5’ (single door) bus stop enclosure at the parking garage pick up location. Guase Inc. sells a used one for $991.00 and I can work a deal with them for a discount to cover the cost of installation. In addition, the enclosure includes space for advertisements which can be given to the installer in exchange for labor. Using private contractors to construct the shelters is one way to obtain and maintain shelters at no public cost. Private contractors typically use revenues generated by advertisements on the shelters.

3. Anticipated Benefits
Commuting students and invited guests will have the physical comfort of the enclosure when waiting for the bus in addition to realizing that the university cares about their welfare. The university in turn may have a greater use of the garage which in turn may free up some spaces in the smaller lots. In addition, classes may have a greater turnout during inclement weather if students know that can get out of the cold and driving rain. Furthermore, the Hot Cup coffee shop may increase business by using some of the advertisement space in the enclosure to make more people aware of their shop as well as that they had an integral role in BSU receiving the bus stop.

4. Scholarship in Support of the Project
The Hot Cup joined the Bridgewater Community in 2006, and has enjoyed a growing reputation for quality coffee and food served in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. While the Hot Cup serves the entire town of Bridgewater, the shop has enjoyed a particularly close relationship with students, staff and faculty of Bridgewater State University due to the proximity of the Hot Cup to campus. Over the years, The Hot Cup has worked with the BSU Center for Social Justice to support local farmers and local businesses (fruits and vegetables, breads and pastries, and, when possible, meats and cheeses, come from area bakeries and farms); additionally, The Hot Cup started to sell fair trade products exclusively in 2010. In 2012, The Hot Cup, locally owned and operated by two families, both with young children, decided to offer 1000 dollar grants to local elementary and middle schools. The Hot Cup offered these grants in the spirit of being good citizens in their community. The grants had to be submitted by teachers and staff working in the schools, and they had to provide services or equipment that directly affected students. After two years of successfully funding the purchase of sports equipment, books and materials for a special education inclusion classroom, new sod for a playground renovation, and software to make a school’s new smart board purchase more interactive, the Hot Cup decided to work with BSU students on a similar grant project. The Hot Cup agreed to offer three, thousand dollar grants to support student-run projects around campus that improved the quality of life for existing and future BSU students. The Hot Cup hopes to be able to offer grants each year, alternating between local elementary and secondary schools and the University.

1. Introduction to the Problem
Breakfast is often described as the most important meal of the day, passing on breakfast is anything but productive, especially for teenagers. Rightfully, it not only provides important daily nutrients such as protein, fiber, and calcium, but also helps to improve school performance, allowing students to do better on tests, according to the Food and Nutrition Service. When students miss out on breakfast in the morning, they often become distracted more easily, their grades can suffer and they’re more likely to be inefficient during class. However, millions of students in the U.S. start their school days on empty stomachs. In BSU, almost half of the students skip breakfast every day, especially those who have morning classes. Those students usually have less choices of having breakfast, as for they don’t have enough time to reach the dinning hall, and breakfast food is not available in classroom. That’s why it’s important to provide an alternative option – one that starts in schools and makes it harder for students to skip an early meal. With some flexibility, all students can get a nutritious start.

2. Proposed Solution
Setting a “Grab-and-go” breakfast corner is a viable solution. The idea behind this approach is for BSU students to pick up a bagged breakfast on the way to class, and eat at their desks or wherever it is designated. Paper bags are filled with items such as fruit, a cheese stick, milk and whole-grain cereal or bagels that make breakfast easy and convenient. It can be served in a variety of high-traffic areas such as the cafeteria, or entryways of each residence hall, making it easy for students to pick up on their way to class.
This project aims at helping those students who have morning classes to have fresh breakfast as convenient as possible. This breakfast corner will be open at 7:30am- 8:30am on a weekday morning. Thirty paper bags of breakfast will be served in a cold closet in every entry lobby of six residence halls on campus. Students can get one paper bag for free. We budget each paper bag for 5 dollars as maximum, and the total cost of breakfast items is 900 dollars. All the paper bags of breakfast will be delivered by a school van which costs free for renting. Therefore, the budget of other preparation is 70 dollars, including 6 cold closets and the unexpected waste on the delivery way. The left 30 dollars is used to prepare 6 display boards in each breakfast corner, displaying a short notice with the importance of having breakfast, which can inform all the students the great benefits then can get from necessary breakfast.

3. Anticipated Benefits
Studies show that students who eat breakfast on a regular basis perform better academically, have increased attendance and make fewer trips to the school nurse’s office. This one-day breakfast corner is not only a good way of providing fresh breakfast to students conveniently, but also a chance to make students be aware of the importance and necessity of having breakfast. Healthy breakfast will help them concentrate more on their classes, do well in academic achievement, and have a positive lifestyle with delighted mood. BSU students who have morning classes can benefit from this project a lot, not only a convenient breakfast for free, but also great energy for starting a whole day.

Thanks for sharing your proposal. It sounds good for me because I have no time to grab some food in the dinning hall but really want to eat breakfast every day. And the solution is very original. Students can get free bagged breakfasts in the lobby of every residents hall from 7:30-8:30 am every morning. You listed many details about how to take it into practice. The bags will be in a cold closet and fresh food will be delivered every morning on time to make sure several students have access to simple breakfast. In addition, the budget is really nice. If this idea came true, I would be very excited! Your proposal helps students like me to keep healthy and be preoccupied in class easily. Thank you so much!
However, I am still confused about some details of the proposal. Who will be the driver of the van and who will prepare for these bagged breakfast? Even if they are simple food, there should be someone who prepares for the food and put them into bags. In addition, how to get the cold closet for preserve these food. I think these things will cost some money, too. I think you must have some idea about these things, and if you want to explain them in your proposal, it will be better!

Grant Proposal

Second Language Service is one of the academic services provided to BSU students, especially the students whose native language is not English. Now, however, it is quite hard for international students to come over casually and ask for help now due to its spatial limitation. The tutor-and-student pairs meet each other by making an appointment in available time, considering every other pairs schedule. So it is not easy to change their meeting schedules. Even some international students are not much aware of what the service is. As a result, only one-fifth of the students who might need the service are actually making use of the service. Freeing up the spatial constraints would increase the access to SLS and eventually benefit both the students and the school itself.

1. Situation: The “Academic Achievement Center (AAC)” which is the largest hub of student academic services on campus is located on the ground floor of Maxwell Library. The AAC consists of various service centers, including Second Language Service (SLS), Tutoring Center, Writing Studio, Peer Advising Service, Accounting and Finance Lab, Math Service, Academic Coaching Service, and etc. Among them, six service centers including SLS share a little space. The space is divided into six zones, not physically with partitions but with the desks allocated to each office. In the open space, SLS currently has only two desks among 25 desks. Due to the limitation of space, students are not much aware of the service and students who want to make use of the service cannot easily access to it. Given that users are not as many compared to other services and it has a tiny space, it is impossible for SLS to offer a variety of services except for a one-on-one tutoring service. Also, the current AAC tutoring service is about improving general English skill by having a conversation with tutors or working on homework together. However, there are many external interference factors such as noise because the place is always crowded with many students since there are so many offices in the same little space. According to the survey done by SLS, there are approximately 650 students whom English is not their first language. However, only around 30 students actually visit the office weekly.

2. Proposed Solution: On the third floor of Maxwell Library, there used to be the office of International Engagement Center. Now it moved its office to another building outside of the library and the space is empty. Therefore, my suggestion is to move the SLS office to that space. It won't cost a lot of to move the office to the upper stair. Since the original office is consist of two individual rooms and a conference room, SLS can utilize the space depending on the purpose. For instance, they can use the conference room as the tutoring room and two other rooms for casual meetings, cultural events or making an open study room filled with studying materials for developing general English skill.

3. Anticipated Benefits: AAC is an important academic aid for the students whom English is not their native language. In other words, vitalizing the service would help international students at BSU a lot. As the space gets bigger, it would eliminate burdensome problems for both students and SLS center. Also, SLS can provide variety of services such as casual meetings or holding cultural events. Not only for international students but the students who major in Educations would benefit if the SLS becomes more vitalized, since education majors are volunteering for SLS tutor. If the group gets bigger and there comes more students who want to be their students, the more education majors would have a chance. To be specific, if SLS moves the office and get a space such as a common studying room, they can actually “teach” the other students English. It would be a more professional tutoring experience for them.

4. Scholarship in Support of the Project: (I'm not sure what to write in this section.) Introduction to the Problem
One of the most common concerns of our time is recycling. Although people are more aware now of how important it is to recycle, not everyone has started being proactive and making sure that they are properly disposing of all their waste. As college students, we are always on the go, especially the high percentage of commuters that attend Bridgewater State University. Life is so much easier when the items that we need are portable and easy to access. This is why most people are seen with multiple water bottles. Instead of carrying around one reusable water bottle, many students are still opting to carry around several Poland Spring bottles. This is because there is not a purified water station available on campus. Water bubblers can be found in several locations on campus, but since they only produce tap water, many students bypass them altogether.

Proposed Solution
My proposed solution for this would be to install purified water stations on campus. This will encourage students to bring reusable water bottles, which are on sale at the BSU bookstore, and fill them from those stations throughout the day. This way, students are no longer taking up extra space in their bags with extra water bottles, and the amount of water bottles being inappropriately disposed of will go down.

Anticipated Benefits
The benefits of imposing purified water stations on campus are to help the environment. The more people that bring reusable water bottles and use the stations means less disposable water bottles polluting our environment.

Scholarship in Support of the Project
The scholarship that is funding the project is the The Hot Cup, a coffee shop that has been part of Bridgewater State since 2006. The owners of this shop are offering three one-thousand dollar grants to the best project ideas from BSU students that will help improve campus life for all students, incoming and current.

Grant Proposal

The Bridgewater State University is a smoke free campus. As you walk through the campus you see people smoking. Walkways and sidewalks are occasionally littered with the remnants of cigarette butts. While smoking on campus is breaking the rules, the addiction of smoking is a reality that a fair amount of BSU students struggle with.

Proposed Solution

I propose that we set aside a small area on campus as a smoking area. This area could house a few depositories for cigarette butts. I also propose that we show support for those that are trying to quit smoking. Post programs that contact information to support groups.
Anticipated Benefits
I believe that this will be an environmental improvement to the campus. It will give smokers a place to smoke and deposit their cigarette butts into a receptacle opposed to on the ground. It will also relieve non-smokers from being assaulted by second hand smoke.

Grant in support of the project

Hot Cup is a quality coffee shop that joined the Bridgewater community in 2006. The owners and workers of Hot Cup have come to develop a close relationship with the staff and students at BSU. Because of this close relationship, Hot Cup decided to offer $1000 grants to local elementary and middle schools. Teachers and staff had to submit grants that would provide services or equipment that would directly affect their students. Recently Hot Cup decided to work with BSU students. Hot Cup is offering three $1000 grants to support projects that would improve the quality of life for existing and future students.
