Q&A Discussion Board for the Week of 2/5/21 to 2/12/21

2/5/2021

USE THIS SPACE to post questions that you might otherwise email me, particularly questions that you think the entire class would like to know the answer too. You'll have an answer within 24 hours of posting. Certainly continue to email me with questions of a personal nature, but use this page for the kinds of questions folks are typically asking in class.

ADDITIONALLY, use this space this week in particular to ask questions related to the Syllabus Check In assignment, explained on the syllabus, due this week.

In regard to the author interview assignment: what are the parameters of an "author?" If my intention is to go to grad school, could I interview a professor or current graduate student about that kind of upper-level academic writing?

Hi Maddie. It seems that I failed to make the assignment page visible, but I have now. I think I cover this in the assignment description. If you still have questions, tomorrow in class you'll have a chance to ask it.

For the rethink/revise project, can I write about the same story that I was going to use in my writers notebook? I have another idea I can use--just was curious.

The Revise/Rethink should be a project you completed earlier in your academic career. It's not clear to me in your writer's notebook if that is the case with what you are writing about there. But if it is something that you produced in a previous semester, you can use it.

(Syllabus check in question)

You mention that we should use dates for the headings in our writer notebooks, but just for organizational purposes I was wondering if the dates should be the day the writers notebook is due, or if it should be the date of the beginning of the week so you know when our writing for the week started?

I don't really care. Just as long as I know what is new material.

Is there a page limit for the "rethink/revise" text that we can work on. I would like to revise a short story for my assignment, but it's about 20 pages and I was wondering if that was too long.

That's not too long. I think 20 pages is probably the limit of what folks in your workshop are willing to read.

Is there a length requirment for the rethink/revise piece? What would be too many pages?

Length is dependent on what you are revising. I would say between 10 and 20 pages is probably a decent length for prose. Poetry could probably be more, but not much more.

For the workshopping in this class, you mention how we will make our materials available to the class and suggest keeping everything in one Google doc. Instead of keeping everything in one long Google doc, could I create a Google folder with all my material and then share it with everyone? That way each assignment has its own document, and it might be easier to keep a draft and then a final version, too.

I have a question about the syllabus. It says during week three that we do have in person class. This confuses me because I thought after the second week the class would switch between online and offline learning. So since the last two classes we had together online, doesn't that mean this week we have to work on stuff on our own without being in class? I just wanted to make sure. Maybe I read it wrong, but I know during the week three part of the syllabus it says "in class" which is why I am confused.

Our class is supposed to go from 12:20 - 2:55. However, Professor Torda has altered the timeframe so we just meet from 12:30 to 2:30. Because she's ending class a half hour early, we will make up for that lost half hour with asynchronous work during the week. So we will have class every Friday unless we are told otherwise. Does this help, Brittany?

Sort of. I still think Professor Torda said we were suppose to have class online every other week. Unless I am really tired right now, I believe that is what she said. I think she does this for all her classes on the site. I'm taking YA with her and she does this for that class too. Is what you said on the syllabus somewhere? Cause I had trouble finding it. If you can point me to it that would be very helpful. Thanks! :)

You are confusing the schedule for 344, which you are also in, with ENGL 489. 489 meets for two hours face-to-face every week.

(Syllabus Assignment)

Can I use the Writer's Journal to brainstorm for my thesis when need be? I wanted to ask since it's technically for another "class" but it's what I am spending most of my writing time outside of academic assignments.

I think I'm OK with this. You might ask your thesis advisor about this. Additionally, I'd like to know a bit more about your thesis. I guess I hesitated a little because if it is an academic thesis, I've never really encountered that in 489, but, at the same time, it's still writing. It's still research. So, again, I'm OK with that. However, check with your thesis advisor to be safe on that end.

Can we please have the order of the books to be read after Interior Chinatown. I don’t need dates. Just the order, so I can prioritize my time effectively as I have 14 other books besides this class. Including five English novels from the 19th century. Drudgery. But required.

The syllabus is fully up to date CJ. Keep in mind that, yes, we have book length readings but we also have readings on weeks that we don't have books due. I know you know this. I'm just saying it.

Will we be doing any written workshops in this course or only workshopping on Zoom?

I'm not sure what you mean. Are you asking if you are going to have to read and respond in writing to your classmates writing? If so, the answer is yes. I'm assuming you don't mean are we going to meet in person.
