Post #3: POSITIONING YOURSELF AS A RESEARCHER/FORMULATING YOUR QUESTION.

12/27/2021

BEFORE YOU POST: Read the information on this website about this project, including the Overview of the Research Project and the complete assignment instructions for the "positioning yourself as a researcher/formulating your question" assignments (available by clicking on the links here or through the drop down menu at the top of this page.

WHAT TO POST: Try to formulate your research question based on what you understand about the assignment (again, based on the overview of the research assignment). You can try out more than one question if you are struggling to decide what to research for the project (based on the value of a college education).

Then, try to answer the following three questions. By trying to answer them here, you will help yourself to complete the "positioning yourself as a researcher/formulating your question" assignment that is due on Tuesday, 28 December 2021.
  1. What do you feel like you know about your subject?
  2. What do you feel like you don't know about your subject?
  3. Finally, what kinds of experience have you had in your life that could affect your attitude toward your question and towards the research? In other word, what experiences might create bias either for or against certain kinds of information that you will find as you research the answer to your question?

THEN RESPOND TO YOUR CLASSMATES: Read through what your classmates post. Respond to at least one other classmate. Can you help them refine their research question? Are there things about the question that you think will be hard to figure out? Do you see any similarities between your question and theirs? Help each other develop the best version of their research question.

I want to try to answer the significance of international students going to university in the United States through research.
I think I know a lot about my subject, because I am also an international student. But there are still some issues that I am not sure about, such as the degree of recognition of the degree after returning to China.
In addition, I also think that studying in a country that is not native language will have some language communication difficulties, but this is also part of the progress of learning.
Finally, as to whether an American university degree can help when returning to work in China, my answer is yes. But this also depends on the ranking of the school you are attending. In China, QS rankings are generally valued. The higher the ranking, the stronger the help.

Hi Ruoqi,
I love you topic about international student in the United States. As an international student, it is really hard for me to understand all of the content in class in a foreign language, but I have to learn. I am really excited about your final paper!

Research Question:
How is US college education different from Chinese college education?

Since I study in the US and my hometown is China, I’m curious about the difference of college education between two countries. From my own experience, I think that the general education in US college encourages students to choose various courses, while Chinese universities encourages students to choose their major in the first year and continue in the specific area. However, I don’t have the chance to attend the Chinese universities, so I need to research for other resources to answer my question. Moreover, I have personally experienced the college life in US university, and it could create bias when I tried to compare two education system. Therefore, I should pay attention to avoid the bias and carefully evaluate the resources.

Hi Geogre,
I think the topics I discussed with you are almost the same, they are all about education in China and the United States. Because I am also an international student from China, I think your research question is also very good and it is worth exploring.

Hi Ruoqi, thank you for your comment. I have also read your research question. It's great that you mention the ranking system and its influence in China. It's a good point to research for. Also, I'm glad to see that we have similar background experience for this research topic.

My research Topic is about how intership impacts college students' career life.
I am from China and I am an international student in OSU. In my home country, college students will be required to do an Intership during their Junior or Senior year, however, in the US, most of the Chinese student are chasing for more than one intership during four year studies. I already finished one in Marketing, which helps me a alot in understanding of request of clints and machanism of marketing. For me, I really enjoy working with my knowledge. So I want to know the what is the impact for all of the college student of internship.
