DURFEE Engl 101 Writing Rhetorically Portfolios
Overview
This course has been about what it takes to write and read in college. The difference for you is that it is happening while you are still in high school. It is worth your time to think about what you’ve learned about the difference between reading and writing for high school and reading and writing for college. What is the difference in terms of skill? In terms of effort? In terms of student performance and teacher expectation?
Because reflection in this circumstance is highly beneficial, a portfolio is the best way to finish out your semester. In this collection of your work, you will have the chance to show me what you’ve learned as a reader, writer, researcher, and critical thinker. You will also have the chance to show me just how college ready you actually are.
There are two particular skills that the portfolio assesses. First, I will see what you’ve learned through your ability to revise. A great deal of this portfolio is about revision. Secondly, I will see if you can successfully talk about what you’ve learned via reflection. As I read and evaluate this portfolio, these are the two things I will value the most.

On the last day of classes, you are responsible for turning in the following:
“The charm of baseball is that, dull as it may be on the field, it is endlessly fascinating as a rehash.” - Jim Murray
“You can’t be afraid to make errors! You can’t be afraid to be naked before the crowd, because no one can ever master the game of baseball, or conquer it. You can only challenge it.” - Lou Brock
“People who write about spring training not being necessary have never tried to throw a baseball.” -Sandy Koufax
“Don’t forget to swing hard, in case you hit the ball.” -Woodie Held
. For each of those quotes, explain to me:
HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED ON YOUR FINAL PORTFOLIO
Your final portfolio is worth 25% of your final grade in this course.
*In order to earn a B on your final portfolio, you must turn in all of the material listed above, on time.
*If any of these materials are not included, you can only earn a C for your final portfolio.
*Failure to turn in number 5 will mean you've failed the portfolio.
*An A portfolio is the result of doing everything required for a B; thoughtful and substantial revision on those materials requiring revision; your effort to be thoughtful and about what you've learned in your short reflections and in your

Details
On the last day of classes, you are responsible for turning in the following:
- Your successful Reading Responses. If you’ve turned in your Reading Responses and received an “A for Acceptable” on them. You do NOT need to revise. If you turned in your Reading Responses and received a “U for Unacceptable” on them, you should revise at least three of them if you want to earn a B grade. To earn the A grade, you must turn in four successful, “A for acceptable” Reading Responses. If you are wondering what the different between an A or a U is, you should consult the “Reading Response” assignment either in the paper version I passed out in class or visit that assignment page on this website.
- In addition to your successful Reading Responses, please include a typed 200-300 word reflection on what you’ve learned about what it takes to be a good reader in a college classroom—what skills does it take to read well and then write about what you’ve read?
- Your Revised Mix Tape Memoir. Using the feedback you got on your paper at midterm, revise your paper accordingly. Revising this paper is a requirement and will secure a B grade if you have otherwise completed all the other requirements of the “B” grade. If you are wondering how to earn an “A” grade, consult the original assignment sheet—either the paper version or the online assignment page on this site.
- In addition to the revised Mix Tape Memoir, please include a typed 200-300 word discussion of what you revised and how it change the paper (either for better or worse). Please talk about what you figured out about writing (thesis, argument, evidence, etc) while you revised.
- Your completed Big Idea Research Paper. You should include your annotated bibliography, your rough draft from the workshop, and the quick write exercise from 22 & 24 May 2019 along with your completed paper. For complete details on how you earn a B grade and an A grade, please consult the assignment either in the paper or web version.
- In addition to the completed Big Idea Research Paper and all the materials listed above, please include a typed 200-300 word discussion of what you learned about writing a research paper—so, in other words, what did you learn about how to do research and then incorporate that into an argument.
- A Final Portfolio Cover letter. Your final portfolio cover letter will be 700 words, typed, and double-spaced. You will have some time in class to work on it, but you won’t be able to finish it in class. After you’ve assembled your portfolio, including all of your short reflections, explain to me how the following four quotes that seem to be about baseball are actually about reading and writing:
“The charm of baseball is that, dull as it may be on the field, it is endlessly fascinating as a rehash.” - Jim Murray
“You can’t be afraid to make errors! You can’t be afraid to be naked before the crowd, because no one can ever master the game of baseball, or conquer it. You can only challenge it.” - Lou Brock
“People who write about spring training not being necessary have never tried to throw a baseball.” -Sandy Koufax
“Don’t forget to swing hard, in case you hit the ball.” -Woodie Held
. For each of those quotes, explain to me:
- Why you think I chose it: explain to me what you think I was thinking it says about learning to be a better writer, reader, researcher, and thinker.
- In what ways you have, as a writer/reader and student, learned some of these lessons--talk about specific parts of the writing you are including in the portfolio as examples of how you have learned some of these lessons—or have not learned them.
- What you still have to learn and work on either in your remaining year of high school or in your first semester of college.
